App guide
The Best Journaling Apps of 2026: 10 Picks Compared
Updated . Prices, platforms and features checked on each app's own pages that day.
Ten journaling apps, each matched to a kind of writer, with the price, the platforms and one standout feature checked on each app's own pages.
Short answer: for a private, long-term journal on almost any device, Day One is a strong place to start, and its free plan includes end-to-end encryption. On an iPhone, Apple Journal is free and already there. Pick Diarium if you want to pay once, Daylio if you would rather tap than type, Rosebud if you want an AI to reflect with, and Start From Done (ours) if your journal is meant to move one goal forward.
We make Start From Done. It is in this list, and we have tried to treat it like every other entry: facts only, and the same limits noted. No company paid to be here, and none of the links are affiliate links.

How we chose
We started from the apps that show up again and again in this year's "best journaling apps" lists and app store collections, then narrowed to 10 that each do one job clearly. For every app we read its own website, pricing page or store listing on the review date and wrote down three things: the price, the platforms and one feature the company itself describes. Each entry links to those pages. We did not run long-term tests of every app, and we do not publish star ratings, user counts or reviews we cannot check, so this guide compares what each app offers, in its own words.
Prices are in US dollars and can differ by country and store. Where an app sells several in-app prices, we give the range or the main plan and point you to the store page.
The 10 picks
1. Day One
Best for: A private archive on every device
Day One is the journal many people keep for years. It runs nearly everywhere, from Apple Watch to Windows and the web, and every plan, the free one included, is end-to-end encrypted. Silver adds more photos per entry and audio transcription; Gold adds Day One's AI tools.
- Price: Free (Basic). Silver $49.99 a year. Gold $74.99 a year.
- Platforms: iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, Android, Windows, web
- Standout: End-to-end encryption on every plan, the free one included. Gold adds Day One's AI features, such as Daily Chat and entry summaries.
- Keep in mind: The free plan allows one photo per entry. Paid plans are priced by the year.

2. Apple Journal
Best for: Free and built in on iPhone
If you use an iPhone and want to start tonight, Apple Journal costs nothing and needs no setup. Its journaling suggestions are made on the device from your day, and you pick what they can draw on.
- Price: Free.
- Platforms: iPhone and iPad (iOS 17.2 or later); Apple says entries sync with Mac through iCloud
- Standout: Journaling suggestions made on the device from how you use your iPhone, and you choose what they can use. Lock it with Face ID, Touch ID or your passcode.
- Keep in mind: Apple devices only.
Checked October 17, 2026: Journal on the App Store
3. Journey
Best for: One journal across Android, Apple and desktop
Journey suits people who switch between an Android phone and a computer. One membership covers every platform, and Journey Cloud Sync adds end-to-end encryption.
- Price: Free version. Membership $6.99 a month or $49.99 a year on the US App Store, with a lifetime option.
- Platforms: iPhone, iPad, Mac, Android, desktop and web
- Standout: End-to-end encryption when you use Journey Cloud Sync, and one membership covers every platform.
- Keep in mind: Encryption is tied to Journey Cloud Sync.
Checked October 17, 2026: Journey membership, Journey on the App Store, Journey help: export on Android
4. Diarium
Best for: Paying once instead of every month
Diarium has no subscription: Pro is a one-time purchase per platform. It fills in the day for you, with photos, calendar events and workouts, which makes a blank page less blank. A strong pick on Windows.
- Price: Free. Pro is a one-time purchase per platform; the Windows app is paid and includes Pro.
- Platforms: Windows, Android, iPhone, iPad, Mac
- Standout: Starts each entry with the day's photos, calendar events and workouts (Strava, Apple Health, Health Connect). Sync uses your own cloud storage.
- Keep in mind: Pro is bought once on each platform, so two platforms means two purchases.

5. Daylio
Best for: Tracking mood without writing much
Daylio is a micro diary. You tap a mood and a few activities, and over time it shows patterns. Notes, photos and voice memos are optional, so a busy day still gets an entry.
- Price: Free. Premium by in-app purchase (the US App Store lists options from $4.99), with a 7-day free trial.
- Platforms: iPhone, iPad, Android
- Standout: Log a day by tapping a mood and activities, no typing needed. Daylio says it does not send your entries to its servers.
- Keep in mind: Built for short check-ins more than long writing.
Checked October 17, 2026: Daylio home page, Daylio Premium features, Daylio on the App Store
6. Rosebud
Best for: Reflecting with an AI that remembers
Rosebud is built around conversation. It remembers past entries and helps you connect them, and it sends weekly reflection reports. The free plan lets you try it before Bloom.
- Price: Free to use. Bloom $12.99 a month or $107.99 a year.
- Platforms: iPhone, Android, web
- Standout: An AI journal that remembers what you wrote before and helps connect it, with weekly reflection reports.
- Keep in mind: Its memory and reflection features center on talking with an AI.

7. Stoic
Best for: Journaling plus a screen time guard
Stoic pairs a journal with Stoic Shield, which blocks distracting apps. It runs on Apple devices and Android, with Premium and AI tiers sold in the app.
- Price: Free. Premium and AI plans by in-app purchase (the US App Store lists options from $6.99, and a $299 lifetime).
- Platforms: iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, Android
- Standout: A journal with Stoic Shield built in, which blocks distracting apps to cut screen time.
- Keep in mind: Several paid tiers; compare them in the store before you subscribe.
Checked October 17, 2026: Stoic on the App Store, Stoic on Google Play
8. Five Minute Journal
Best for: A short gratitude routine
The Five Minute Journal app follows the paper journal's guided format: a quick entry in the morning and another at night. Good if you want structure more than a blank page.
- Price: Free. Premium monthly, yearly or lifetime (the US App Store lists $4.99 a month and yearly options from $19.99).
- Platforms: iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, Android
- Standout: A guided gratitude format, with a short entry in the morning and another in the evening.
- Keep in mind: The format is fixed by design, so it suits a routine more than free writing.
Checked October 17, 2026: Intelligent Change: app cost, 5 Minute Journal on the App Store
9. Reflectly
Best for: Mood graphs with light prompts
Reflectly guides short entries and turns your moods into correlations and graphs, so you can see what tends to lift or drag your week.
- Price: Free. Reflectly Premium by in-app purchase (US App Store).
- Platforms: iPhone, iPad, Android
- Standout: A mood tracker that shows correlations and graphs from your entries.
- Keep in mind: The US App Store lists ten Premium prices, so check which one you are offered.
Checked October 17, 2026: Reflectly on the App Store, Reflectly on Google Play
10. Start From Done (we make this app)
Best for: Journaling toward one goal
Start From Done is a reverse journal: you write a goal as if it is already done, and the app drafts the plan back to today, including an if-then plan for what could stop you and one 45 minute step. At night you log what you did, and it lands on a Done list. Your journal stays on your device unless you choose to share it. Share only what you choose: invite a friend as your witness for accountability, and they can invite you back.
- Price: Free core loop. Pro $9.99 a month, $59.99 a year with a 7-day free trial, or $249 once for the first 100 founders (then $299).
- Platforms: Web app you install on iPhone, Android and desktop; App Store and Google Play versions are planned
- Standout: You write the goal as already done. The app drafts backward milestones, an if-then plan for what could stop you and one 45 minute step for today, and you log what you did on a Done list.
- Keep in mind: A newer, smaller app built for one goal at a time; it is not a diary for long entries.
Checked October 17, 2026: Start From Done, Start From Done: the app, free and Pro, Start From Done privacy
Also considered: Notion, which can hold a journal you design yourself from its free templates, and paper, which still works.

How to choose a journaling app
- Decide what the journal is for. Remembering your life points to an archive (Day One, Journey, Diarium). Noticing your mood points to a tracker (Daylio, Reflectly). Working through thoughts points to guided or AI reflection (Rosebud, Five Minute Journal). Moving a goal forward points to a goal journal (Start From Done).
- Check your devices. Apple Journal is Apple only. Day One, Journey, Diarium and Daylio reach Android too.
- Read the privacy terms. End-to-end encryption, where your entries are stored and whether an AI reads them differ a lot between apps. Day One encrypts every plan; Journey encrypts with its own sync; Daylio says it does not send your entries to its servers.
- Make sure you can leave. Look for an export before you write a year of entries. Our guide to moving your journal between apps has the steps for Day One, Journey, Daylio, Diarium and Apple Journal.
- Pick the price model you will keep. One-time (Diarium Pro, Streaks), yearly (Day One), or free with extras (Apple Journal, Daylio, Start From Done).
Many people keep two: an archive for memories and a goal journal for what is next. If that is you, read what reverse journaling is and how it differs from gratitude journaling.
